Winter Blooms: Bulbs to Plant Now for a Colourful Cold Season

Snowdrops

As we’re moving steadily towards autumn and then winter, it’s time to start thinking about what jobs need doing in the garden over the next few months. Just because winter is on its way doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye to our beautiful gardens until spring rolls around again.

So which bulbs should you be planting now for a colourful cold season?

Winter Blooms: Bulbs to Plant Now

Snowdrops (Galanthus)

First on my list are Snowdrops. These hardy little flowers are often the first sign that spring is not too far away, flowering from January onwards. They love a spot in partial shade and will happily naturalise under trees or shrubs if left undisturbed. Plant your Snowdrop bulbs in late summer or early autumn at a depth of around 10cm and roughly 10cm apart.

Winter Aconites (Eranthis hyemalis)

Winter Aconites are another early bloomer that can brighten up your garden from late winter onwards with their cheerful yellow flowers surrounded by frilly green collars. Like Snowdrops, they prefer partial shade and well-drained soil. Plant them at a depth of about 5cm and give them plenty of space – around 15cm between each bulb.

Crocus

Crocuses are incredibly versatile when it comes to their growing conditions; they can handle both full sun and light shade, making them an excellent choice for almost any garden! Their vibrant purple, white or yellow flowers make a striking contrast against the bare earth in February-March when they typically flower.

Daffodils (Narcissus)

No list of winter-blooming bulbs would be complete without mentioning Daffodils! There are many varieties available that bloom at different times throughout late winter and early spring so you could have a succession of cheerful yellow blooms lighting up your garden from February through April!

Tulips

Tulips require more patience as they won’t bloom until April-May but trust me when I say they’re worth the wait! With such an array of colours available there’s bound to be something that suits your taste whether you prefer pastel shades or bold primary colours.

When & How To Plant Your Bulbs

Now you know which bulbs to look out for, let’s talk about when and how to plant them for best results:

When: The best time to plant these bulbs is late summer through autumn (August-October). This gives them plenty of time to establish before the colder weather sets in.

How: Dig holes three times deeper than the bulb itself and place it pointy side up in the hole before covering with soil.

Spacing: Each type of bulb has different spacing requirements so check this before planting but as a general rule allow enough space between each bulb for them to grow without competition.

Remember ; even though we’re still enjoying some lovely sunny days now, it’s essential we think ahead if we want our gardens looking tip-top during those chilly months!
